Fires of Varanasi
The internationally acclaimed Ragamala Dance Company “imbues the South Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam with a thoroughly contemporary exuberance” (Dance Magazine). In Fires of Varanasi, Ragamala brings to life the spirit of the sacred Indian city — its cremation fires and the ashes that drift through the waters of the Ganges River. With their visionary approach to this ancient art form, the dancers bridge the space between the profane world and a sacred state of mind in a powerful metaphor for resilience and the profound belief in the tenacity of people and cultures.
